Underlying作形容詞用，常出現在商務英語閱讀中，意爲“根本的；基礎的；相關的”，如underlying trend潛在趨勢、underlying meaning潛在含義、underlying system深層制度、underlying issues潛在問題、underlying share期權基礎股份、underlying securities相關證券。

在商業買賣合同中，有一個特定術語：標的資產（underlying asset），是指在合同中規定的涉及交易範圍的資產或是司法案件中涉及糾紛的需要明確的財產。標的資產包括動產和不動產（movable and immovable property），可以是現金（ready money，cash）、證券（security）和房產（house property）等。
