這首歌曲是綠日樂隊的主唱比利·喬·阿姆斯特朗寫給父親的。1982年9月，比利的父親因爲癌症而去世，當時比利只有10歲。葬禮上， 比利因爲承受不了而跑回了家，他把自己鎖在了房間裏。當母親來叫他時，他只對母親說了一句：“九月末叫醒我”（Wake Me Up When September Ends）。而這句話也成爲了該首歌曲的標題。
