Costa Coffee and Barclaycard have announced the launch of a contactless coffee cup payment system in the UK.

Named the Clever Cup, the silicon-based reusable cup has an integrated contactless technology, powered by Barclaycard’s bPay, for a faster and more convenient alternative payment option.
這種硅基可重複使用的杯子取名爲Clever Cup，內部集成了一種非接觸技術，用以提供更快、更便利的支付選擇；這些技術由巴克萊卡的bPay服務提供支持。
Created to encourage the use of reusable cups, the contactless chip is detachable and customers can use the cup to make purchases within Costa stores or anywhere else accepting of contactless payments.
這種非接觸式芯片可以拆卸，它的研發是爲了鼓勵大家使用可重複使用的杯子，顧客可以在Costa店內或任何其他接受非接觸式支付的地方用這個杯子付款。
Users are also able to track their spending, top up their balance and block or cancel contactless payments online or through the available bPay app.

According to Finextra, Costa Coffee managing director Jason Cotta said: “Contactless technology has become increasingly prominent in our daily lives and through the launch of the new Costa / Barclaycard Clever Cup we hope to appeal to those tech-savvy customers to help facilitate and drive environmentally friendly behaviour.”

The contactless coffee cup is expected to be available for £14.99 across all Costa stores, however a rollout date hasn’t yet been confirmed.

The Clever Cup initiative is a part of Costa’s wider plan to increase the use of reusable cups and tackle the growing issue of coffee cups ending up in landfills. In April this year, the coffeehouse chain committed to recycling the same volume of cups it puts onto the market.

Launched this year in partnership with five national waste collectors – each responsible for collecting, sorting and transporting the cups to recycling plants across the UK – Costa said it pays a £70 supplement for every tonne of cups collected.

This year alone, the company expects to recycle “at least” 100 million cups and up to 500 million – the equivalent of it’s entire yearly sales of takeaway cups and a fifth of those consumed in the UK (2.5bn) each year – by 2020.

As well as benefitting the environment, the initiative will also support the only three paper mills in the UK that can “correctly” recycle coffee cups, who will move from recycling 14 millions cups to 100 million this year alone.

Costa managing director, Dominic Paul, said: “Costa is putting its money where its mouth is, to find an immediate solution to increasing the volume of takeaway coffee cups being recycled in the UK. It also dispels the myth that coffee cups can’t be recycled.

Costa Coffee operates over 2,380 shops in the UK and more than 1,300 in 31 international markets. So this move of theirs is expected to have a great impact.
