Thanks for Everything

In our lives we rarely express our gratitude1 to the people we see the most, the people we live with.

In fact, we don’t have to wait for anniversaries to thank the ones around us —the ones so easily overlooked.

If I have learned anything about giving thanks, it is this: Give it now! While your feeling of appreciation is alive and sincere, act on it. Saying thanks is such an easy way to add to the world’s happiness. Saying thanks not only brightens someone else’s world, but it also brightens your own. If you’re feeling left out, unloved or unappreciated, try reaching out to others. It may be just the medicine you need.

Once a young man named Mark Brian was sent to a remote parish2 of Kwakiutl Indians in British Columbia. The Indians, he had been told, did not have a word for "thank you". But Brian soon found that these people had exceptional3 generosity. Instead of saying thanks, it is their custom to return every favor with a favor of their own, and every kindness with an equal or superior kindness. This is how they show their gratitude.

I wonder if we had no words in our vocabulary for "thank you", would we do a better job of communicating our gratitude? Would we be more responsive, more sensitive, and more caring?

Thankfulness sets in motion a chain re-action that transforms people all around us —including ourselves. For no one ever misunderstands the melody4 of a grateful heart.

The Miners

This is a true story in Africa. Once, six miners were excavating coal in a very deep mine.

Suddenly, the mine collapsed, and the exit was blocked. The miners were isolated from outside. This kind of accidents happened very often there. According to their experience, they realized that what they needed most was oxygen3, which might last three hours for them.

At the time, among the six people, only one of them had a watch. So they agreed that the miner who had the watch should announce the time once every half hour. When the first half hour passed, the miner with the watch mentioned lightly "Half hour has passed".

But he was exceptionally strained and worried at heart, because he was announcing the approaching dead line. At this time, he brainstormed and decided to reduce the pain of death of others.

The second half hour passed, but he kept silent. Another quarter passed, then, he braced himself up and said: "One hour passed." In fact, 75 minutes have already passed. Another hour passed, the miner with the watch announced for the third time that the so-called half hour passed. His co-workers thought that 90 minutes had passed, but only he knew that 135 minutes had passed.

Four and half hours passed before the rescure workers arrived. To the surprise of everyone, five of the six miners survived. Only one of them was suffocated6- he was the miner with the watch.

Because of the unconsciousness of the miners, they did not know when the miners stopped announcing time, but he had brought hopes of life to others.

A Morning Wish

The sun has just risen in the morning of another day. What can I wish this day may bring me?

Nothing that shall make the world or others poorer, nothing at the expense of other men, but just those few things which in their coming do not stop me but touch me rather, as they pass and gather strength.

I wish that this day could bring me a few friends, who understand me, and yet remain my friends; I also wish that this day could bring me a job to do which has real value.

I wish that this day could bring me a mind unafraid to travel, and I wish that this day could bring me an understanding heart.

I wish that this day could bring me a sight of the eternal hills, and the blue sea stretching to the horizon, and of something beautiful which the hands of men have made.

I wish that this day could bring me a sense of humor, and the power to laugh, a little leisure with nothing to do.

And I desire for a few moments of quiet, silent meditation* in the morning of this day.

I also wish that this day could bring me the patience to wait for the coming of these things, with the wisdom to know them when they come, and the wit not to change this morning wish of mine.
