Butterfly Insights

A marvelous lesson appeared for me just now as I was exiting through the garage.

As I opened the garage door, I startled a large moth, which, upon spreading its wings, displayed a bright red "tail" hidden by the motley brown wings, more a "butterfly" than a moth.

It flew immediately to its perceived escape, the circle-topped window where it frantically tried to exit thru the invisible wall of closed glass.

I raised the third-car garage door in hopes of aiding its escape. That caused it to fly higher and higher and become entangled in a spider web. Fearful that it would remain entangled in the web, I selected a long-handled broom to assist him escaping the tangled threads.

At this, he returned to furiously pumping his wings and banging into the glass, which was, in his perspective, the pathway of escape, but remained his cage.

By simply turning his focus to one side, he would have easily exited his prison. Rather, due to his intent on one direction, he remained confined, captive.

The World is a Puzzle

There was a man who had a little boy that he loved very much. Everyday after work the man would come home and play with the little boy. He would always spend all of his extra time playing with the little boy.

One night, while the man was at work, he realized that he had extra work to do for the evening, and that he wouldn't be able to play with his little boy. But, he wanted to be able to give the boy something to keep him busy. So, looking around his office, he saw a magazine with a large map of the world on the cover. He got an idea. He removed the map, and then patiently tore it up into small pieces. Then he put all the pieces in his coat pocket.

When he got home, the little boy came running to him and was ready to play. The man explained that he had extra work to do and couldn't play just now, but he led the little boy into the dining room, and taking out all the pieces of the map, he spread them on the table. He explained that it was a map of the world, and that by the time he could put it back together, his extra work would be finished, and they could both play. Surely this would keep the child busy for hours, he thought.

About half an hour later the boy came to the man and said, "Okay, it's finished. Can we play now?"

The man was surprised, saying, "That's impossible. Let's go see." And sure enough, there was the picture of the world; all put together, every piece in its place.

The man said, "That's amazing! How did you do that?" The boy said, "It was simple. On the back of the page was a picture of a man. When I put the man together the whole world fell into place."

Calamity

災禍

A girl grumbled to her father about her hard life. She didn't know what she had to do and wanted to give up. She felt tired for fighting and fighting. One problem had been finished but the other overcame.

Her father, a cook, took her into the kitchen. He poured water into three pans and boiled them. After boiling, in the first pan was put some carrots, the second was put some eggs and the last was put with coffee. He waited for them for a few minutes without any words from his mouth.

The girl closed her mouth and waited impatiently, confused by what her father did. After approximately 20 minutes, her father turned off the stove, took out the carrots and put them in a bowl. He took the eggs and put them in a bowl. After that the coffee was poured into a cup.

Turning back to his daughter, he asked, "My sweet heart, what do you see?" "Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.

Her father told her to close her eyes and asked her to touch the carrots. She did and felt that the carrots were soft. After that he asked her to take the eggs and break them. After peeling them, she got the eggs, cooked and hard. The last, the father asked her to smell the coffee. She asked, "What's the meaning, Father?"

He explained that each had suffered the same unfortunate experience - the boiling water, but each had a different reaction. The strong and hard carrots had become soft and weak after being in the boiling water.

父親解釋說:“胡蘿蔔、雞蛋和咖啡都遭受到了同樣的不幸,經受了沸水的考驗,但是它們的反應截然不同。硬而粗壯的胡蘿蔔在沸水中變得軟弱無力;

The fragile eggs with thin epidermis covering the liquid interior became hard after cooked. The coffee grounds were very unique, but they could change water. "Who are you?" asked her father, "When calamity knocks at your door, what is your reaction? Are you carrots, eggs, or coffee?"
