Violence in Iraq killed more than two dozen people Saturday, part of a surge in unrest that has sparked fears the country may be slipping back into widespread conflict.

The casualties come a day after Iraqi forces launched an operation to retake areas near Fallujah, a city west of Baghdad in Anbar Province. Parts of the city have been held by al-Qaida-linked fighters for more than four months.
