Romain Rolland once said:

"Most men die at twenty or thirty;

thereafter they are only reflections of themselves,

for the rest of their lives they are aping themselves,

repeating from day to day more and more mechanically and affectedly what they said and did and thought and loved when they were alive."

Recently, I suddenly realized that this quote is talking about me.

I chose a stable job back as a civil servant in my hometown under my parents' advice after I graduated from college.

The job is easy. And my workload is quite small.

So I have plenty of time of my own to spend.

I bought my car and my house and went on dates which are arranged by my parents.

Everything goes well in my life.

But, last month I went to a classmates reunion. And it crashed my heart.

When we were having the meal. Some of my classmates talked about their interesting jobs and interesting challenges in Internet companies. Some of them were talking about strategies in investing in fund and stocks. Some of them were talking about all the new skills they have been learning, which I hadn't even heard of.

But I? All I could talk about was that my wife just got pregnant.

And now it seems like my child is about to take the same boring path that I have taken.

Is this the life that I want?

Is this even life?

This suddenly becomes so horrible to me. I can't live like this.

And that's why I started to search for a new job. I don't want to die when I am thirty.

Life is only worth living when there are things to explore.

Think of how stingy you are with your money: if someone on the street asks for $10, you're not giving it to them. There's no way you're giving a 30% tip for a normal dining experience. And so on.

And yet so many of us just waste ungodly amounts of our time. We throw it away, every day. I know I do unless I'm careful. What helps me to not waste time is to see it as an investment, and to keep track of the returns I get for my investment.

This approach has led me to recognize that some things offer incredible immediate return on investment: a night spent learning a new song on my preferred instruments, for example, gives me a lifetime of being able to play that song. That's an incredible return. Other investments are more like low-interest, high security , long-term investments: going to the gym, eating right, etc. Some, like reading good books, are kind of a combination of both.

But many activities are worthless from an investment perspective: whatever benefit they seem to give doesn't last any longer than the activity itself."Price is what you pay. Value is what you get." - Warren Buffett. This applies to everything: money, relationships, time. Knowing this changes your life.

I don't know when it first started.

I don't really talk to my friends anymore.

We just send each other texts and emojis on social network.

And the ones who don't do this often gradually fade away from my daily life.

I don't even talk to my family much anymore.

They all have their wonderful lives inside their smartphones , just like me.

Those days when I can chat joyfully with people who I love inside a cosy restaurant with mouthwatering feast in front of us are long gone.

Sometimes when this thought came across my mind I realized that I really miss this.

There are moments in which I thought to myself: I'm I still myself? Or have I become my phone.

Yes, technology is what keeps us going forward.

But we really should not go too fast.

We need time to empty our minds and reflect on ourselves.

We need time to feel all the feelings that make us human.
