Immediate family這個概念在各種法律中會有不同的定義，但一般來説，英文中的直系親屬包括父母、兄弟姐妹(siblings)、配偶(spouses)和子女。Close relative也可表達同樣的意思。
extended family 稍遠的親屬
Grandparents
英美人民稱呼自己的祖父母時有很多種親暱叫法。奶奶、外婆可以叫作granny、nana、grandma;爺爺、外公可以叫作grandad、grandpa等。
但對他人提起自己的祖父母時，一般就説grandfather和grandmother。
如果你想分清楚到底是爸爸那邊還是媽媽那邊的祖父母，就可以用“on ... side”的表達，例句：
My grandmother on my mom's side is Korean.
我外婆是韓國人。
你還可以用maternal grandparent來指代外婆外公，爺爺奶奶則稱為paternal grandparent。這種説法比較正式。例句：
The patient says that his maternal grandfather died of brain cancer.
病人説他的外祖父死於腦癌。
曾祖父母是great-grandparents。所以great-uncle就是舅老爺、姑老爺，great-aunt就是伯祖母、姑姥姥。

離婚(divorce)、再婚(remarriage)、領養(adoption)會產生的一些更復雜的家庭關係，比如：
step-father/mother 繼父繼母
繼父繼母的孩子叫做step-brother或step-sister。
你的親生父親/母親和繼母/繼父共同生育的孩子則叫做half-brother或half-sister。
養父養母稱為adoptive parents，而被領養的孩子管自己的親生父母叫biological parents或birth parents。
