衛國大夫孔圉聰明好學，更難得的是他是個非常謙虛的人。在孔圉死後，衛國國君爲了讓後代的人都能學習和發揚他好學的精神，因此特別賜給他一個“文公”的稱號。後人就尊稱他爲孔文子。孔子的學生子貢也是衛國人，但是他卻不認爲孔圉配得上那樣高的評價。有一次，他問孔子說：“孔圉的學問及才華雖然很高，但是比他更傑出的人還很多，憑什麼賜給孔圉‘文公’的稱號？”孔子聽了微笑說：“孔圉非常勤奮好學，非常聰明，而且如果有任何不懂的事情，就算對方地位或學問不如他，他都會大方而謙虛的請教，一點都不因此而羞恥，這就是他難得的地方，因此賜給他“文公”的稱號並不會不恰當”。經過孔子這樣的解釋，子貢終於明白了。
