Matilda

Roald Dahl

I once wrote a paper on the influence of fairy tales on Roald Dahl'swriting and it gave me a new appreciation for his strange and delightful words.Matilda's battles with her cruel me parents and the bossy headmisres,MissTrunchbull, are equally fumy and frightening, but they're also aspirational.

There was a bit of me that didn't want to love this when everyone else onthe planet did but the horror story is brilliant. “You can use me as a last resort(選擇), and if nobody else volunteers, then Iwill do it.” This was an actual reply from a parent after I put out a requestfor volunteers for my kids lacrosse(長曲棍球)club.

I guess that there's probably some demanding work schedule, or socialanxiety around stepping up to help for an unknown sport. She may just need alittle persuading. So I try again and tug at the heartstrings. I mention thesingle parent with four kids running the show and I talk about the dad coachinga team that his kids aren’t even on … At this point the unwilling parent speaksup,“Alright. Yes, I’ll do it.”

I’m secretly relieved because I know there’s real power in sharingvolunteer responsibilities among many. The unwilling parent organizes the mealschedule, sends out emails, and collects money for end-of-season gifts.Somewhere along the way, the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable memberof the team. The coach is able to focus on the kids while the other parents arerelieved to be off the hook for another season. Handing out sliced oranges tobloodthirsty kids can be as exciting as watching your own kid score a goal.

Still, most of us volunteers breathe a sigh of relief when the season comesto a close. That relief is coupled with a deep understanding of why the samepeople keep coming back for more: Connecting to the community(社區)as you freelygive your time, money, skills, or services provides a real joy. Volunteeringjust feels so good.

In that sense, I’m pretty sure volunteering is more of a selfish act thanI’d freely like to admit. However, if others benefit in the process, and I getsome reward too, does it really matter where my motivation lies?

24.What can we infer about the parent from her reply in paragraph l?

B. She isn't good at sports.

A. She gets interested in lacrosse.

B. She is proud of her kids.

C. She’ll work for another season.

27. Why does the author like doing volunteer work?

A. It gives her a sense of duty.

B. It makes her very happy.

C. It enables her to work hard.

D. It brings her material rewards.

C

高考英語作文

There are many people who think that wealth is better than health. I usedto think so until one day I read a story about Howard Hughes. He was an Americanbillionaire who got anything he wanted. However, in the last twenty years of hislife, his health began to deteriorate and he was miserable. He had the bestdoctors and nurses. However, he could still find no relief. I realized thathealth is worth all the money in the world. If you have millions of dollars butyour health is poor, you will not be able to do what you want to do. I wouldlike to say dont hurt yourself trying to make money. Instead take care of yourbody and be happy with what you do have. Health is more important.

So I think health is more important than wealth. People can do nothing ifthey are always in poor health, let alone happiness. No matter we are rich ornot, we can not ignore the importance of health.
