Ask John Morse, publisher of Merriam-Webster Dictionaries, to 10 the word that defines the close of the millennium and he doesn’t hesitate: “Internet”.

The Internet has swept into the American vocabulary and 11 to so many new words and phrases---- netizens, chat room and 12 , among them---- that it has come to represent an era in social history.

“We first started seeing 13 citations in 1994, and 14 it was established in
the dictionary,” Morse says, “It was just astounding.”

Just a century ago, another form of 15 swept into the language. In the 1898 edition of Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, the hot new word was “telephone”. It brought massive social change and reshape 16 people did business, just as the Internet is doing today.

“Telephone” was no easy linguistic act to follow. It helps bring into 17 a wide range of new words and phrases---- busy signals, wrong numbers, voice mails, cell phones. It also gave the United States its 18 : Hello.

But “Internet” is holding its own, in part by borrowing words from older technologies and giving them new meanings, 19 “bookmark”, “copy” and “browser”.

Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the inhabitants of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the inhabitants become annoyed and unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country’s economy. It is important to think about the people of a destination country and how tourism affects tourists. Tourism should also advance the well-being (health and happiness) of local inhabitants.

Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country’s economy can suffer.

On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Business can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first-class roads, and other support facilities(設施) needed by tourist attractions. For example, a major international-class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel lose money.

Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity ,sewers (陰溝) to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.

71. Which of the following has most probably been discussed in the paragraph that goes before the passage?

A. tourists B. passengers C. population D. citizens

75. It can be inferred from the text that __________.

A. the author doesn't like tourism developing so fast

B. local people will benefit from tourist attraction

C. other parts of a country's economy won't benefit from tourism much

D. we can't build too many support facilities

C

The pickle jar(泡菜壇), as far back as I can remember, sat beside the dresser in my parents’ bedroom. When he got ready for bed, dad would toss any coins that were in his pockets into the jar, as they dropped, they landed with a merry jingle(叮噹聲).

Whenever the jar was full, dad would sit at the kitchen table and roll up the coins before taking them to the bank.

Every time, as he slid the box of rolled coins across the counter at the bank toward the casher(收銀員), he would smile proudly and say: “These are for my son’s college fund(基金).”

We would always celebrate each deposit(儲蓄) by stopping for an ice cream cone. Dad would show me the coins in his change and say: “when we get home, we’ll start filling the jar again.” He always let me drop the first coins into the empty jar. “You might have to get to college on loose change,” he said. “But you’ll get there.”

The years passed, and I went to college, married
and took a job in another town.

Once, while visiting my parents, I noticed that the pickle jar was gone. It had served its purpose. My dad was a man of few words, and he never lectured me on the values of determination, perseverance(毅力) of faith. The pickle jar had taught me all of those far better than the most flowery of words could have done.

Soon, my daughter Jessica was born. We spent Christmas that year with my parents. After dinner, Mom and Dad sat next to each other on the sofa, taking turns holding their first grandchild. When Jessica began to cry, my wife Susan took her from Dad’s arms to put her in her crib(嬰兒牀) in my parents’ room.

Susan came back with tears in her eyes. She led me into my parent’s room. “Look,” she said softly. To my surprise, there, next to the dresser, as if it had never been removed, stood the old pickle jar, the bottom already covered with coins. I walked over to it, dug down into my pocket, and pulled out several coins. Choked by emotion, I dropped them into the jar.

I looked up and saw that Dad had slipped quietly into the room. Our eyes locked, and I knew he was feeling the same emotion. Neither of us spoke, because we knew that nothing had to be said.

76. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. The author felt disappointed when he found that the pickle jar was gone.

B. The author and his wife were both grateful for what his parents had done for him and his daughter.

C. The author’s parents put the pickle jar back in their room to remind themselves of the hard year.

D. The author felt embarrassed whenever his father mentioned the pickle jar to him and his wife.

77. The story’s main lesson is that _____________.

A. any difficulties can be overcome with the support of your family

B. a dream is never far away as long as people keep up with it faithfully

C. parents teach us much more through their actions than through their words

D. saving is always a good virtue to pass down to the next generation

78. Which words best describe the author’s father?

A. Humorous and patient B. Quiet yet loving

C. Generous and talkative D. Proud but strict

79. The pickle jar in the article represents(代表) ____________.

A. advice of parents B. determination to reach a goal

C. healthy family relations D. one’s purpose in life

No fight can end, and no friendship can move on, until everyone says these little words: I’m sorry. Sometimes, though, they can be difficult to say. _______81________

It’s not about winning.

Friendships aren’t like the Super Bowl, and there should never be a winner and a loser. When you start fighting with a friend, it may feel important that you “win” the fight by proving you’re right and he is wrong, or by making him be the first to apologize.

In reality, you’ll BOTH LOSE if you let your fight ruin your friendship, and you will BOTH WIN if you find a way to heal it.

_______82_______

You may have heard the expression “His pride stood in the way.” It is usually used to describe a person who is so determined to be “right” that he lets an opportunity for happiness pass him by forever. _______83______ Remember: as time goes on, we usually forget who was right and who was wrong in a disagreement, and only remember the sadness of losing a friend.

Take the first step.

Are you sick of fighting? Do you think this fight is just not important enough to ruin your
friendship?

_______84_______ You don’t have to take full responsibility(責任) for starting the fight, or even say that your feelings were wrong. But you should find something you did or said that’s worth apologizing for. Maybe you’re sorry that you let the fight go for so long, or that you overreacted(反應過度) to something your friend did. If you say you’re sorry, it is like an invitation for your friend to do the same. ________85_________

try to be the first to apologize.

thinking about you pride.

’s about taking some responsibility for the argument.

’t let this happen to a friendship you care about.

are some things to keep in mind.

One possible version:

It has been almost two months since I came to this school. I can well remember when I knew I would study in this amazing high school, how excited I was. But now sometimes I feel a little upset, because I meet with some difficulties in my life and study as well. As a fresh student in senior 1, this is the first time that I have left my parents to live in a boarding school, so sometimes I feel homesick and unhappy. Besides, as there are so many excellent students around me, I feel extremely stressed.

However, I know it’s no use feeling sad and worried, so I decide to do something to change the situation. First of all, in order to make good use of my time, I should make a schedule. Only in this way can I study all the subjects efficiently. In addition, I should be active in making new friends and getting along well with my classmates and roommates, which will free me from loneliness and homesickness.

I believe with my determination and a positive attitude I will overcome all the difficulties. “After all, tomorrow is another day.”

Ask John Morse, publisher of Merriam-Webster Dictionaries, to name the word that defines the close of the millennium and he doesn’t hesitate: “Internet”.

The Internet has swept into the American vocabulary and given birth to so many new words and phrases---- netizens, chat room and home page, among them---- that it has come to represent an era in social history.

“We first started seeing a number of citations in 1994, and by 1998 it was established in the dictionary,” Morse says, “It was just astounding.”

Just a century ago, another form of communication swept into
the language. In the 1898 edition of Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, the hot new word was “telephone”. It brought massive social change and reshaped the way people did business, just as the Internet is doing today.

“Telephone” was no easy linguistic act to follow. It helps bring into popular usage a wide range of new words and phrases---- busy signals, wrong numbers, voice mails, cell phones. It also gave the United States its standard greeting: Hello.

But “Internet” is holding its own, in part by borrowing words from older technologies and giving them new meanings, such as “bookmark”, “copy” and “browser”.

Indeed, “Internet” has created a new vocabulary that has come to represent a historical era of change

I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.

I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl(貓頭鷹) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.

I examined the chick(雛鳥) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.

The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.

Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.

A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by zxxk the greatest sight of all — LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.

Some of the world’s most famous musicians recently gathered in Paris and New Orleans to celebrate the first annual International Jazz Day. UNESCO( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(聯合) voice across cultures.

Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations.

It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that. As the Kennedy Center’s artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture.

“Jazz seems like it’s not really a part of the American appetite,” Moran tells National Public Radio’s reporter Neal Conan. “What I’m hoping to accomplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and write anymore. It’s actually color, and it’s actually digital.”

Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost. “The music can’t be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same,” says Moran.

Last year, Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Waller’s music for a dance party, “Just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music,” says Moran. “For me, it’s the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion(情感) lie? Are we, as humans, gaining any insight(感悟) on how to talk about ourselves and how something as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts? Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wider context,” says Moran, “so I want to continue those dialogues. Those are the things I want to foster.”

A buld-it-yourself solar still(蒸餾器) is one of the best ways to obtain drinking water in areas where the liquid is not readily available. Developed by two doctors in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it’s an excellent water collector. Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary equipment with you, since it’s all but impossible to find natural substitutes. The only components required, though, are a 5'

5' sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a container— perhaps just a drinking cup — to catch the water. These pieces can be folded into a neat little pack and fastened on your belt.

To construct a working still, use a sharp stick or rock to dig a hole four feet across and three feet deep. Try to make the hole in a damp area to increase the water catcher’s productivity. Place your cup in the deepest part of the hole. Then lay the tube in place so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up — and out — the side of the hole.

Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighting the sheet’s center down with a rock. The plastic should now form a cone(圓錐體) with 45-degree-angled sides. The low point of the sheet must be centered directly over, and no more than three inches above, the cup.

The solar still works by creating a greenhouse under the plastic. Ground water evaporates (蒸發) and collects on the sheet until small drops of water form, run down the material and fall off into the cup. When the container is full, you can suck the refreshment zxxk out through the tube, and won’t have to break down the still every time you need a drink.

32. What do we know about the solar still equipment from the first paragraph?

A. It’s delicate. B. It’s expensive.

C. It’s complex. D. It’s portable.

33. What does the underlined phrase “the water catcher” in paragraph 2 refer to?

A. The tube. B. The still.

C. The hole. D. The cup.

34. What’s the last step of constructing a working solar still?

A. Dig a hole of a certain size. B. Put the cup in place.

C. Weight the sheet’s center down. D. Cover the hole with the plastic sheet.

35. When a solar still works, drops of water come into the cup form .

A. the plastic tube B. outside the hole

C. the open air D. beneath the sheet

If anyone had told me three years ago that I would be spending most of my weekends camping. I would have laughed heartily. Campers, in my eyes, were people who enjoyed insect bites, ill-cooked meals, and uncomfortable sleeping bags. They had nothing in common with me. 36 .

The friends who introduced me to camping thought that it meant to be a pioneer. 37 We sleep in a tent, cooked over an open fire, and walked a long distance to take the shower and use the bathroom. This brief visit with Mother Nature cost me two days off from work, recovering from a bad case of sunburn and the doctor’s bill for my son’s food poisoning.

I was, nevertheless, talked into going on another fun-filled holiday in the wilderness. 38 Instead, we had a pop-up camper with comfortable beds and an air conditioner. My nature-loving friends had remembered to bring all the necessities of life.

39 We have done a lot of it since. Recently, we bought a twenty-eight-foot travel trailer complete with a bathroom and a built-in TV set. There is a separate bedroom, a modern kitchen with a refrigerator. The trailer even has matching carpet and curtains.

40 It must be true that sooner or later, everyone finds his or her way back to nature. I recommend that you find your way in style.

There has been a recent trend in the food service industry toward lower fat content and less salt. This trend, which was started by the medical community(醫學界) 61 a method of fighting heart disease, has had some unintended side 62 (effect) such as overweight and heart disease-the very thing the medical community was trying to fight.

In the summer holiday following my eighteen birthday, I took driving lessons. I still remember how hard first day was. Before getting into the car, I thought I had learned the instructor’s orders, so once I started the car, my mind goes blank. I forgot what he had said to me altogether. The instructor kept repeating the word, “Speed up!” “Slow down!” “Turning left!” I was so much nervous that I could hardly tell which direction was left. A few minutes late, the instructor asked me to stop the car. It was a relief and I came to a suddenly stop just in the middle on the road.
