It made me feel sad that he couldn’t get involved and play with all the other children. He used to lie on the floor and I wanted to lie down beside him. I went home one day crying because I worried about him. My mum asked what was wrong. 1 told her I was sad about my school friend. Ever since the first day I met my school friend I have wanted to help severely disabled people.

At my secondary school, there was a boy with a profound (完全的)speech impairment. Teachers used to call me to help interpret. The teachers all said how good I was at helping others. When I got a little older I met my best mate who also had a speech impairment. I've known him now for nearly forty years and I have been his voice many times.

My passion is to help severely disabled people. This is why advocacy is very important to me. Too many times, I’ve seen people without a voice left in a corner and forgotten about. It is people like this that need advocates. This is why I am doing my advocacy course, to help give other people the chance they deserve.

We often just use our sense of sight, touch, smell, and taste to eat food. But what about our sense of hearing? Does sound also affect our dining experience?

A new report answers, ‘yes,’it does.

That answer comes from researchers at Brigham Young University and Colorado State University in the United States. They found that hearing is important in the eating experience.

Hearing is often called “the forgotten food sense,” says Ryan Elder. Elder is an assistant professor of marketing at Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Management. He says that if people notice the sound the food makes as they eat it, they might eat less.

On the other hand, watching loud television or listening to loud music while eating can hide such noises. And this could lead to overeating.

For the study, the researchers wanted to test whether the sounds of eating had any effect on how much a person ate. During the experiments, the test subjects wore headphones and listened to noise at either a high or low audio level. Then researchers gave them a crunchy snack: pretzels (脆餅乾). The study found that subjects who listened to the higher volume noise ate more pretzels than those with the low audio levels.

Elder says that when hiding the sounds of eating, like when you watch television or listen to loud music while eating, we take away the sense of hearing. And this may cause you to eat more than you would normally.

The researchers are calling this, the “crunch effect (咀嚼聲奇效).”

The researchers admit that the effects may not seem like much at one meal. But over a week, a month, or a year, all that food can really add up.

28. The text is especially helpful for those who care about .

A. healthy eating B. food cooking C. weight losing D. food digesting

29. Which sense is often ignored in the eating experience?

A. Sight B. Smell. C. Touch. D. Hearing.

30. The reason why the researchers gave the subjects “pretzels” might be that .

A. they tasted delicious B. they could make a loud noise

C. they were cheap D. they could be eaten a lot

31. According to the study,if we want to eat less, we should .

A. listen to ourselves eat B. listen to loud music

C. watch violent television D. wear headphones

Urban air pollution is a huge public health issue — it kills more than 3 million people every year, according to the latest World Health Organization estimates.

As cities from Beijing to Paris to Sydney focus on reducing car traffic as a way to improve air quality, the city of Amsterdam is really ahead of the pack. In about 10 years, gas-powered cars in the city will be banned. Their bus fleet will be powered by solar and wind by 2025.

While major transportation and infrastructure changes (基礎設施的改變)take time, researchers at the Wageningen University in The Netherlands are testing a more immediate solution: a new type of honeysuckle (金銀花)called Green Junkie(綠色迷) new honeysuckle is bred to consume more carbon dioxide - in other words, it eats smog.

“The parts of a plant that pick up air Pollution out of the air are the ‘hairs,’ so what they’ve changed for this honeysuckle is that they’ve made it very, very hairy," Emily Parry from AMS Institute, told Fastcoexist. The leaves of the plant are bigger and hairier than typical honeysuckle, and they grow more quickly, too. And it's fed with a special organic fertilizer made with plant waste collected from the city.

It makes sense that plants would be hybridized (雜交)for pollution cleanup of a special kind. Many plants absorb pollution—so much so that NASA has long promoted a list of those that can keep indoor air cleaner—and many homeowners choose plants that are particularly good at doing so. Some grasses and Ivy are already used in traffic medians and roadsides specially because they can reduce particulate pollution (顆粒污染)by up to 60 percent.

32. By mentioning the solutions of some cities in the second paragraph, the author wants lo express .

A. can grow more slowly

B. need animal waste to grow

C. can grow larger and hairier leaves

D. can d decrease more smog by up to 60 percent

35. What is the best title for the text?

A. A huge public health issue

B. Is smog more and more terrible?

C. Cars powered by solar and wind

D. Can a flower help cities reduce air pollution?

第二節:短文寫作(25分)

One possible version:

Dear Tom,

How is everything with you? No words are strong enough to express my thanks for your help in Brazil.

As for learning Chinese songs, I think, choose to learn some easy children’s songs first, such as two tigers, little rabbits, little swallows, counting ducks and so on. Secondly, it would be a good idea if you try to recite the lines of the songs first and then try to follow the rhythms. Thirdly, why not sing the songs with your friends, which will make you enjoy them and in return learn them more quickly. Finally, do remember: practice makes perfect! Try your best and you will make it.

I hope you will find these proposals useful.

Best wishes for you!

Sincerely yours,
