上面的小短文中出現了四個when引導的從句,下面筆者逐一分析各句的結構與類型。首先來看a句:
a. Many students say that their time at university is when they can experience pure love.
我們可以看到,這裏when引導的從句用在了系動詞is後,也就是說,這一從句是一個表語從句(名詞從句的一種)。這裏的when相當於“the time when”,所以a句可改寫成:“Many students say that their time at university is the time when they can experience pure love.”改寫之後,句子中的when引導的就是一個定語從句了。下面請看b句:
b. This is a time when love is innocent when two people come together for love, rather than a house, car or a good job.
b句中有兩個when引導的從句,第一個從句“when love is innocent”修飾前面的時間名詞time,是一個定語從句;而第二個when引導的從句“when two people come together for love, rather than a house, car or a good job”是描述前面的謂語“is innocent”,是時間狀語從句,用於說明什麼時候愛情纔是純真的,這時when譯成“當……時候”。再來看c句:
c. It is a time when they can choose who they love and how they love away from outside pressure.
顯然,c句和b句的第一個從句類似,when引導的是定語從句,修飾前面的a time。
如何區分when引導的定語從句與時間狀語從句
從以上的分析中,我們知道when引導的三類從句各有自己的結構、特徵和意義,那麼該如何區分這三類從句呢?本期筆者通過以下例句,先跟大家探討一下如何區分when引導的定語從句與時間狀語從句。
2. a. I graduated from Cambridge University when I was 22 years old.
我22歲的時候從劍橋大學畢業。
b. I graduated from Cambridge University last summer, when I was 22 years old.
我去年夏季從劍橋大學畢業,當時我22歲。
我們知道,a句中的從句爲時間狀語從句,修飾動詞graduate,而b句中的從句爲定語從句,修飾的是when前面的時間狀語last summer。通過對比,我們可以總結出when引導的這兩種從句有如下四點不同:
第一,修飾關係不同。若when引導定語從句,when前面必然有表示時間的名詞,即先行詞;若when引導時間狀語從句,則其前面沒有表示時間的名詞,這是因爲when引導的時間狀語從句是用來修飾動詞,表示動作或狀態發生的時間。a句中when前面沒有表示時間的名詞,因而不是定語從句;這裏when引導的從句修飾的是graduate,表示“我從劍橋大學畢業”的時間,因而是時間狀語從句。b句中的when前面有last summer,故其引導的從句是定語從句。簡言之,when引導的定語從句必然修飾時間名詞,而when引導的時間狀語從句修飾動詞。
第二,從句位置不同。若when引導的是定語從句,從句只能置於主句的時間名詞(即先行詞)之後;若when引導的是時間狀語從句,從句可以置於主句之後,也可以置於主句之前(此時用逗號來分隔主從句)。如a句可以改寫成:When I was 22 years old, I graduated from Cambridge University. 而b句則不能這樣改寫。
第三,when的作用不同。若when引導定語從句,其指代的是表示時間的先行詞,這時when在定語從句中作狀語,修飾從句的謂語;若when引導時間狀語從句,則when在從句中不作任何成分,只起連接主句和從句的作用。如上面的b句,when指代last summer,作“I was 22 years old”的狀語,即“去年夏天我是22歲”;而a句中的when在從句中沒有作任何成分。
第四,when的翻譯不同。若when引導定語從句,一般可依據從句的時態來翻譯:如果從句謂語是過去時,when可譯爲“當時”“那時”;如果從句謂語是將來時,when可譯成“到時”“屆時”。而引導時間狀語從句的when,通常都是譯成“當……時候”,如a句可譯爲“當我22歲的時候,我從劍橋大學畢業。”
分清兩種從句,避免句意誤解
爲何要注意區分when引導的從句是定語從句還是時間狀語從句呢?筆者認爲,如果不區分清楚when所引導的從句類型,往往容易誤解句子的原意。
請看下面這個句子:
3. China is now at a stage of accelerated industrialization and urbanization when the contradiction between economic growth and environmental protection is particularly prominent.
中國目前正處於工業化和城市化加速發展的階段,此時經濟增長和環境保護之間的矛盾十分突出。
這句話的原譯是“中國正處於工業化和城市化加速發展的階段,也正處於經濟增長和環境保護矛盾十分突出的時期。”這一譯文並不忠實於原文。究其原因是譯者沒有正確把握when從句的修飾關係。下面筆者爲讀者一一分析。
通過分析例句,我們可以發現,when引導的從句修飾的是時間名詞stage,也就是說when引導的是定語從句,而不是時間從句。原文主句的意思是“ 中國正處於工業化和城市化加速發展的階段”;然後,使用when引導的定語從句修飾時間名詞stage,表示“工業化和城市化加速發展的階段”有些什麼特點,這時when可以譯爲“在這樣一個階段”。
由此可見,譯者由於沒有看出when引導的從句與stage之間所形成的修飾關係,誤將主句內容與when引導的從句內容看成了並列關係,從而產生了誤譯。因而,在學習和閱讀的過程中,一定要注意區分when引導的從句是屬於哪種類型,否則誤判when引導的從句與主句形成的修飾關係,可能會曲解句子的原意。

②when 說明從句的動作和主句的動作可以是同時,也可以是先後發生;while 則強調主句的動作在從句動作的發生的過程中或主從句兩個動作同時發生.
③由when引導的時間狀語從句,主句用過去進行時,從句應用一般過去時;如果從句和主句的動作同時發生,兩句都用過去進行時的時候,多用while引導,如：
