看英劇學口語：如何優雅地拒絕別人

1. He felt I had enough on my plate as it was.他覺得我要學的已經夠多了。
Notes:“have enough on my plate”從字面上看就是“盤子裏已經夠多食物了”，引申爲“忙得不可開交，脫不開身”。這個表達的優點很明顯啊，單詞簡單而且畫面感十足。例如：
I can’t take that elective now. I have had enough on my plate.
我已經夠忙的了，不能去上那門選修課了。
2. Be nice to think that one could, if not hold one’s own, then at least not have to steer the conversation away to dogs or horses every time.往好了想，就算需要聊別的，至少不用每次都把話題強行轉移到狗或者賽馬身上。
Notes: “hold one’s own”表示“堅持自己的立場，可匹敵”。例如：

Notes: “drone on”表示某人聲音單調低沉，嘮嘮叨叨地說。劇中女王的母親拿這個短語形容首相在和女王討論工作時的狀態。此外，這個短語還可以表示某件事單調無聊地進行。更多例句：

請別再嘀咕你自己的各種困難了。

4. You deserve to put your feet up.你也該退休，好好休息下了。
Notes: 大家都知道一種很舒服的休息姿態是把腳擡起來搭在茶几或凳子上。英文中這個表述很簡單“put your feet up”,引申義就是“休息”。劇中是女王對自己即將退休的祕書這樣說道。例如：
After days of hard work, it’s so nice to be home and put your feet up.
經過連日的辛苦勞作，能回到家好好放鬆，休息下真好。
You look exhausted. Come here and put your feet up.
你看上去累壞了。快過來好好休息下。
5. When I am discussing agendas of the day with these people that I find myself on the back foot as something of a disadvantage, because I can’t keep up. 我跟他們討論日程安排時，我發現自己處於非常不利的地位。我很被動，因爲我聽不懂。
Notes：“on the back foot”用來形容“處於不利的境地”。“keep up”字面理解起來是“保持不落後”，換句話說就是“跟上”，在談話中跟上其他人也就是“聽得懂，聽得明白”。例如：
