據悉，《耶魯名句錄》第一版是2006年發表的，而這是夏皮羅第五次發佈他的年度最受關注引用語排行榜。今年，夏皮羅注意到，排名領先的兩句話都源自本年度最重大的新聞：墨西哥灣漏油事件、茶黨蔘選。

夏皮羅選擇引用語時遵從有名、重要、反映時代精神的原則。引用語不一定慷慨激昂或者精美絕倫。

排位第三的是飛機乘客約翰•泰納在聖迭戈機場對安檢人員的一句話：“如果你碰到我的私處，我就讓你被捕。”
