Home 家

What makes a home? Love and sympathy and confidence.

It is a place where kindly affections exist among all the members of the family. The parents take good care of their children, and the children are interested in the activities of their parents. Thus all of them are bound together by affection, and they find their home to be the cheeriest place in the world.

A home without love is no more a home than a body without a soul is a man. Every civilized person is a social one should live alone. A man may lead a successful and prosperous life, but prosperity alone can by no means insure happiness.

Many great personages in the world history had deep affections for their homes. Your home may be poor and humble, but your duty lies there. You should try to make it cheerful and comfortable. The greater the difficulties, the richer will be your reward. A home is more than afamily dwelling. It is a school in which people are trained for citizenship. A man will not render good service to his country if he can do nothing good for his home; for in proportion as he loves his home, will he love his country. The home is the birthplace of true patriotism. It is thesecret of social welfare and national greatness. It is the basis and origin of civilization.

Too Dear for the Whistle

When I was a child of seven years old , my friends ,on a holiday ,filled my pocket with coppers . I went atonce to a shop where they sold toys for children g charmed with the sound of a whistle that Ihadseen by the way , in the hands of another boy , Ihanded over all my money for one . I then camehome , went whistling all over house , much pleased with my whistle , but disturbing all myfamily brother and sister and cousins ,when I told of the bargain I had made, said I hadgiven four times as much as the whistl was worth . they put me in mind of what good things Imight have bought with the rest of the money, and laughed at me so much for my folly that Icried with vaxation . think about the matter gave me more chagrin than the whistle gave mepleasure.

This , however , was afterwards of use to me , for the impression continued on my mind . sothat often , when I was tempted to buy something I do not need . I said to myself . "Don't givetoo much for the whistle ," and I saved my money . As I grew up , came into the world andobserved the actions of men . I thought I met with many ,very many ,who "gave too much forthe whistle ." When I saw some man too eager for cout favour, wasting his time at courtgetherings ,giving up his rest , his liberty ,his virtue, and perhaps hisfriends ,for royal favour , Isaid to myself --"This man gives too much for the whistle." When I saw another fond ofpopularity , constantly taking part in political affairs ,neglecting his own business ,and ruiningit by neglect , "He pays , indeed ," said I , "too dear for his whistle ."

If I knew a miser who gave up every kind of comfortable living , all the pleasure of doing goodto others , all the esteem of his fellow citizens and the joys of friendship , for the sake ofgathering and keepingwealth --"Poor man." said I , "you pay too dear for your whistle ."When Imet a man of pleasure , who did not try to improve his mind or his fortune but merelydevoted himself to having a good time ,perhaps neglecting his health ,"Mistaken man," said I , "you are providing pain for yourself , instead of pleasure ; you are paying too dear for yourwhistle ." If I saw someone fond of appearance of who had fine clothes , fine houses , finefurniture , fine earrings , all above his fortune , and for which he had run into debt ,and endshis career in a prison ."Alas," said I , "he has paid dear , very dear , for his whistle . " In shortthe miseries of mankind are largely due to their putting a false value on things --to giving "toomuchfor their whistles".

Run through the rain

She had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful brown haired, freckle-faced image of innocence. It was pouring outside. The kind of rain that gushes over the top of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit the Earth, it has no time to flow down the spout.

We all stood there under the awning and just inside the door of the Wal-Mart. We all waited, some patiently, others irritated, because nature messed up their hurried day. I am always mesmerized by rainfall. I get lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world. Memories of running, splashing so carefree as a child come pouring in as a welcome reprieve from the worries of my day.

Her voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance we were all caught in, “Mom, let's run through the rain." she said.

"What?" Mom asked.

"Let's run through the rain!" She repeated.

"No, honey. We'll wait until it slows down a bit." Mom replied.

This young child waited about another minute and repeated: "Mom, let's run through the rain."

"We'll get soaked if we do." Mom said.

"No, we won't, Mom. That's not what you said this morning," the young girl said as she tugged at her Mom's arm."

"This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?"

"Don't you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, If God can get us through this, he can get us through anything!"

The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I swear you couldn't hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes. Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say.

Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child's life. Time when innocent trust can be nurtured so that it will bloom into faith. "Honey, you are absolutely right. Let's run through the rain. If get wet, well maybe we just needed washing." Mom said. Then off they ran.

We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they darted past the cars and. They held their shopping bags over their heads just in case. They got soaked. But they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars. And yes, I did. I ran. I got wet. I needed umstances or people can take away your material possessions, they can take away your money, and they can take away your health. But no one can ever take away your precious memories. So, don't forget to make time and take the opportunities to make memories every day!

To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven. I hope you still take the time to run through the rain.
