The hare and the tortoise

The hare was once boasting of his speed before the other animals. "I have never been beaten," he said, "when I run at full speed, no one is faster than me."

The tortoise said quietly, "I will race with you." "That is a good joke," said the hare. "I could dance around you the whole way."

The race started. The hare darted almost out of sight at once. He soon stopped and lay down to have a nap.

The tortoise plodded on and on. When the hare awoke from his nap, he saw the tortoise was near the finish line, and that he had lost the race.

龜兔賽跑

●兔子向動物們誇耀他的速度,“我從來沒有失敗過,”他說,“當我奔跑時,沒有人比我更快。”

●烏龜平靜地說:“我要與你比賽。”“真是笑話,我可以邊玩邊和你賽跑。”兔子說。

(二)

The bat, the birds,and the beasts

There was a big fight between the birds and the beasts. The bat did not join in the fight.

Some birds said to the bat, "Come with us." But he replied, "I am a beast."

Later on, some beasts said to him, "Come with us." But he replied, "I am a bird."

At last the fighting ended peacefully. The bat first went to the birds, and wanted to join in the celebration, but they all turned against him. He then went to the beasts, but was also driven away.

蝙蝠、鳥和野獸

●鳥與野獸宣戰,蝙蝠沒有參戰。

●鳥對蝙蝠說:“加入我們吧。”蝙蝠回答說:“我是野獸。”

●後來,一些野獸對蝙蝠說:“加入我們吧。”但是蝙蝠回答說:“我是鳥。”

●當鳥和野獸宣告停戰和平時,交戰雙方明白了蝙蝠的欺騙行爲。蝙蝠來到鳥類當中,他們都敵視他,蝙蝠去野獸那裏,也被趕走。

寓意: 兩面三刀的人,最終不會有好的下場。

A little kid fell in love with another little kid, a school mate.

Sometimes the kids think they fall in love when they have

a crush on someone else in the class, when they’re eight

or ten years old or something like that. So the eight-year-old

kid came back home and asked his father, “Father, is it

expensive to be married?” And the father said, “Yes, son,

it is very expensive.” So the son asked, “How much does it

cost?” And the father said, “I don’t know, son. I’m still paying.”

有個小孩愛上了另一個小孩,對方是學校的同學。八歲或十歲左右的孩子有時會迷戀班上某個人,然後就以爲自己戀愛了。因此這個八歲的小孩回家問他爸爸:「爸爸,結婚很花錢嗎?」爸爸說:「是啊,兒子,非常花錢。」兒子又問:「要花多少錢呢?」爸爸說:「我不知道,兒子,我到現在還一直在付錢啊!」

Belling the cat

Long ago, there was a big cat in the house. He caught many mice while they were stealing food.

One day the mice had a meeting to talk about the way to deal with their common enemy. Some said this, and some said that.

At last a young mouse got up, and said that he had

a good idea.

"We could tie a bell around the neck of the cat. Then when he comes near, we can hear the sound of the bell, and run away."

Everyone approved of this proposal, but an old wise mouse got up and said, "That is all very well, but who will tie the bell to the cat?" The mice looked at each other, but nobody spoke.

老鼠開會

●從前,一所房子裏面有一隻大貓,他抓住了很多偷東西的老鼠。

●一天,老鼠在一起開會商量如何對付他們共同的敵人。會上大家各有各的主張,最後,一隻小老鼠站出來說他有一個好主意。

●“我們可以在貓的脖子上綁一個鈴鐺,那麼如果他來到附近,我們聽到鈴聲就可以馬上逃跑。”

The ass and his purchaser

A man wanted to buy an ass. He went to the market, and saw a likely one. But he wanted to test him first.

So he took the ass home, and put him into the stable with the other asses. The new ass looked around, and immediately went to choose a place next to the laziest ass in the stable.

When the man saw this he put a halter on the ass at once, and gave him back to his owner.

The owner felt quite surprised. He asked the man, "Why are you back so soon? Have you tested him already?" "I don't want to test him any more," replied the man, "From the companion he chose for himself, I could see what sort of animal he is."

驢和買驢的人

●一個買主到市場上去買驢,他看中一頭外表不錯的驢,但是他想要牽走試一試。

●他把驢牽回家,放在自己其他的驢之間,這驢四處看看,立即走向一頭好吃懶做的驢旁邊。

●於是,買驢的人立刻給那頭驢套上轡頭,牽去還給驢的賣主。

●賣主感到很奇怪,他問買主:“你怎麼這麼快就回來了?”買主說:“不必再試了,從他所選擇什麼樣的朋友來看,我已經知道他是什麼樣了。”

寓意: 物以類聚,人以羣分。人們往往喜歡跟與自己相同的人交往,所以,我們可以根據一個人的朋友來推斷他的爲人。

(二)

The The ass in the lion's skin

An ass once found a lion's skin. He put it on, and walked towards the village.

All fled when he came near,both men and animals.

The ass felt quite proud. He lifted his voice and brayed, but then everyone knew him.

His owner came up and gave him a sound whipping.

Shortly afterwards,a fox came up to him and said, "Ah, I knew it was you by your voice."

披着獅皮的驢

●有頭驢發現一張獅子皮,他披着獅子皮走進村莊。

●所有的人和動物見到他走過來都逃走了。

●驢感到很得意,他高聲地嘶叫,卻被人認了出來。他的主人跑過來打了他一頓。

●不久,一隻狐狸也跑過來,對他說:“哦,你一張嘴我就知道你是驢。”

寓意: 外表雖然可以暫時掩蓋一個人的缺點,但它很容易被揭穿。
