One day, Ling Gong, King of the State of Qi, had a sudden whim.
一天，齊靈公心血來潮。
He liked to see women wearing men's clothes and let all the women in his harem do so.
喜歡看女扮男裝，並且讓內宮的女人都這樣做。
Soon afterwards, all the women in the whole country followed the fashion and dressed like men.
不久，全國的女人趕時髦，都女扮男裝。
Seeing the whole country follow this example, Ling Gong became angry, and gave orders to theofficials in all parts of the ountry:
可是，靈公看全國都這樣，就生氣了，又命令各地官吏:
"Whenever you see women dressed like men, you are to tear up their clothes and rip theirwaistbands."
“只要發現女扮男裝的人，就撕破她們的衣服，扯斷她們的腰帶。”
But this trend among women to dress like men couldn't be discouraged.
可是，這股女扮男裝的風氣，仍然沒有能夠剎住。
One day, when the prime minister Yan Zi came to court for an audience with him, Ling Gongasked him:
一天，宰相晏子朝見靈公，靈公問晏子:
"I ordered all the officials to forbid women to wear men's clothes.
“我讓各地官吏禁止女人穿男人的服裝。
Whenever they see them doing so, they are to tear up their clothes and rip their waistbandswithout exception.
只要看到，就一律撕破衣服，扯斷腰帶。
But this trend couldn't be stopped. What exactly is the reason?"
可就是禁止不了。這究竟是什麼原因?”
Yan Zi answered:
晏子回答說:
"Your Majesty, you allow the women in your harem to dress like men, but you forbid thecommon people to do so.
“大王，您讓內宮女扮男裝，卻不讓百姓這樣做;
This is like hanging up the head of an ox outside the door, but selling horsemeat inside.
這就好比門外掛的是牛頭，而門裏賣的是馬肉。
How can that be done?
這怎麼行呢?
If women in your harem are rorbidden to wear men's clothes, then how would the peopleoutside the palace dare to do so any longer?"
如果宮內禁止女扮男裝，那麼宮外的人怎麼再敢這樣做呢?”
Ling Gong nodded his head again and again, and said: "What you have said is right! What youhave said is right!"
靈公連連點頭，說:“你說得對!你說得對!”
Ling Gong ordered his officials to do according to what Yan Zi had said.
靈公命令官吏按照晏子的話去辦。
Sure enough, in less than one month, the trend of dressing like men among women in thewhole country was stopped.
果然，不到一個月，全國各地女扮男裝的風氣就剎住了。

經過一番準備之後，他們才帶着刀箭，牽着獵犬走進密林圍獵。
As a result, all the red deer dashed into their ring of encirclement, and one by one fell dead under the rainfall of arrows.
結果，那些馬鹿都撞進了包圍圈，一頭頭倒斃在雨點般的箭矢之下。
But when some other people came to the mountains to hunt, they would not first seek for yu to fmd out the situation, but rushed rashly into the forest.
但是，另外一些人來山裏圍獵時，他們不是先去找虞瞭解情況，而是冒冒失失地闖進森林。
As a result, after a busy day they couldn't find a single trace of red deer and could only return de jectedlywith empty hands.
結果，他們連馬鹿的蹤影也找不着，白忙了一天，只好空着手垂頭喪氣地回去了。

有一年，齊國很長時間沒有下雨，發生了特大旱災。
Jing Gong, the King of Qi, was very worried.
國王齊景公心裏非常焦急。
He wanted to offer sacrifices to the mountain deity to pray for rain.
他想去祭祀山神求雨。
His prime minister Yan Zi said to him:"Your Majesty, don't do that.
宰相晏子對他說:“大王，不要去。
It is no use to beg the mountain deity for mercy.
求山神沒有用處。
The stones in the mountains are like his bones and sinews;
山上的石頭，就好像山的筋骨;
the soil in the mountains is like his muscle; the grass and trees in the mountains ane like hishair.
山上的泥土，就好像山的肌肉;山上的草木，就好像山的毛髮。
When it doesn't rain for a long time, the hair of the mountain deity will wither and his muscleswill be seared in the sun.
長久不下雨，山神的毛髮也枯死了，肌肉也曬焦了。
Won't the mountain deity be anxious for rain too?
山神難道就不着急要雨嗎?
If he could make it rain, it would have rained long ago."
如果山神能夠使天下雨，那麼雨早已下了。”
Jing Gong said: "All right, we won't beg the mountain deity. Then how about begging Hebo (theriver deity)?"
景公說:“不求山神也罷，那麼去求河伯吧!
"Your Majesty, it's no use either," replied Yan Zi. "
晏子又說:“大王，不行。
Water is the territory of I-Iebo.
水是河伯的國土。
Fish and soft-shelled turtles are his subjects.
魚鱉是河伯的百姓。
When it hasn't rained for a long time, the water in the river will dry up, which means that Hebowill lose his territory;
天不下雨，河裏的水乾了，就等於河伯的國土喪失了;
his subjects like fish and soft-shelled turtles will all die of thirst.
河伯的百姓，像魚呀，鱉呀，也統統要乾死了。
If Hebo could make it rain; it would have rained long ago.
如果河伯能夠叫天下雨，那麼雨早就下了。
What is the use of praying to Hebo?"
去祈求河伯又有什麼用呢?”
Convinced by Yan Zi's words, Jing Gong no longer prayed to the deities for rain.
景公聽了晏子的這番話，就不再去向神求雨了。
