小偷和他的母親

A young man was caught stealing, and sentenced to death three days later.

一個小偷被抓住了，被判處死刑，三天後執行。

He wanted to speak with his mother before the execution. Of course this was granted.

他想在行刑前與他的母親話別，得到了允許。

When his mother came to him, he said, "I want to tell you something." He said something but she could not hear. He whispered again, and when she came close to him, she put her ear to his mouth. He nearly bit off her ear. All the bystanders were horrified.

當他媽媽來到他的面前，他說：“告訴你一件事。”他輕輕說了一遍，但是她聽不到;等她走近些，小偷又輕聲說了一遍。母親將耳朵貼近時，兒子突然咬住母親的耳朵，差點撕下來，周圍的人都驚呆了。

"It is to punish her," he said. "When I was young I began stealing little things, and brought them home to mother. "Instead of punishing me, she laughed and said, ‘It will not be noticed.‘ It is because of her that I am here today."

“這是對她的懲罰，”小偷說，“我小時候小偷小摸，把偷的東西帶回家時，她不但不懲罰我，反而笑着說‘別讓人看見。’就是因爲她我才落個今天這樣的下場。”

One morning a countryman went to his goose‘s nest, and saw a yellow and glittering egg there.

一天早晨，一位農夫發現自家的鵝窩中有一隻金燦燦的蛋。

He took the egg home. To his delight, he found that it was an egg of pure gold.

他將蛋帶回家，驚喜地發現這是一個金蛋。

Every morning the same thing occurred, and he soon became rich by selling his eggs.

此後，農夫每天都能得到一個金蛋。從此，他靠賣他的金蛋變得富有起來。

The countryman became more and more greedy. He wanted to get all the gold at once, so he killed the goose, when he looked inside, he found nothing in its body.

農夫變得越來越貪婪，他想一下子得到鵝肚子中所有的金蛋。於是他殺死了鵝，但是，鵝肚子中什麼也沒有。

When the fox first saw the lion he was terribly frightened. He ran away, and hid himself in the woods.

狐狸第一次見到獅子時非常害怕，趕緊藏到森林裏。

The second time, however, he came near the lion. He stopped at a safe distance, and watched him pass by.

當他第二次遇到獅子時，則站在附近看獅子經過。

The third time they came near one fox went straight up to the lion, and stayed the whole day with him. He asked the lion how his family was, and when they would meet again.

第三次遇到獅子時，他竟有膽量，走了上去，與獅子進行十分親切的談話。

They soon became good friends.

不久，他們變成了好朋友。

A Man and a Satyr having struck up an acquaintance, sat down together to eat. The day being wintry and cold, the Man put his fingers to his mouse and blew opon them. "What's that for, my friend?" asked the Satyr. " My hands are so cold," said the Man, "I do it to warm them." In a little while some hot food was placed before them, and the Man, raising the dish to his mouse, again blew opon it. "And what's the meaning of that, now?" said the Satyr. "Oh," replied the Man, "my porridge is so hot, I do it to cool it." "Nay, then," said the Satyr, "from this moment I renounce your friendship, for I will have nothing to do with one who blows hot and cold with the same mouse."

一個人與賽特偶然相識，坐在一起吃東西。正值冬季，天氣很冷，那人把手放在嘴邊哈氣。賽特問道“我的朋友，那是幹嗎?”這人說“我的手太冷了，這是爲了取暖”。過了一會兒，熱騰騰的食物端上來了，那人把碟子舉到嘴邊又吹了起來，賽特問“這又是幹嗎?”，那人說“哦，我的粥太燙了，我把他吹涼些”。賽特說“從現在起，我要與你絕交，因爲我不想和一個反覆無常的人做朋友”。
