英語短文故事:宋人獻玉A Man of Song Presents a Piece of Jade
There are a man of the State of Song who liked to curry favour with others.
宋國有一個人，喜歡奉承別人。
One day, he got a piece of uncarved jade and went to present it to Zi Han, a minister of the State of Song, with the intention to ingratiate himself with the official.
有一天，他得到了一塊未經雕琢的玉石，便去獻給宋國大臣子罕，想討好一番。
Zi Han adamantly refused to accept it.
子罕執意不受。
Thereupon, this man said in honeyed words: “This is a piece of rare jade. I regard it as a treasure suitable for a gentleman’s utensil. If it gets into the hands of an old gentleman like you, to be worn by you or put on your dining table, that would be most suitable and fitting. I am an unrefined man, not deserving such a valuable treasure.”
於是，那人便花言巧語地說：“這是一塊珍奇的玉石啊，我把它當作寶貝，適宜於做君子的器皿。要是落在老先生你的手中，掛在你的身上，放在你的餐桌上，是最相稱、最適合的。我是粗人，不配使用這種貴重的寶物。”
“You man regard this piece of jade as a treasure,” said Zi Han, “but I do not accept other’s fawning, nor do I regard this kind of conduct a treasure.”
子罕回答說：“你把這塊玉石當作寶貝，英語短文我卻不接受別人的巴結奉承，並且不把這種行爲當作寶貝。”
The man of Song felt he had asked for a snub and sneaked away.
那個宋國人自討沒趣，溜了。
英語短文故事:相輔相成Complementing Each Other
In the past, a man bragged about his how: “There is no bow better than mine. It doesn’t need any arrow!”
從前，有個人自誇他的弓，說：“我的弓嘛，沒有比這更好的了，好得不需要用什麼箭的!”
Anther man bragged about his arrow: “There is no arrow better than mine. It doesn’t need any bow!”
也有人在誇他的箭，說：“我的箭，沒有比這更好了，好得用不着什麼弓了!”
At that time, a man good at archery happened to pass by and heard their dialogue. He said: “You are both wrong. One cannot shoot an arrow without a bow; and without an arrow, how can one hit the target?”
這時候，恰好有一個會射箭的人從他們身邊走過，聽到他們的這段對話，就說：“你們倆個人的話都不對。沒有弓，發不出箭，沒有箭，怎麼能射中目標呢?”
Thereupon, the man good at archery asked them to take out their bow and arrow. Then he showed them how to shoot at the target with a bow and an arrow.
說完後，會射箭的人還叫他們把弓和箭都拿出來，射箭給他們看。
Now they understood: A bow won’t do without an arrow’ nor an arrow without a bow. They complement each other.
他們這才明白：弓不能離開箭，箭也離不開弓，兩者相輔相成。
英語短文故事：The dancing bear跳舞的熊
A bear, who had made his living by dancing for a long time, at length escaped from his master, and returned to his former companions in the woods.
有隻熊以跳舞謀生很有一段日子了，最後逃離了他的主人，回到從林中，回到了從前的老朋友們的身邊。
His brothers welcomed him with most friendly growls. The traveler now told what he had seen foreign countries, told a long history of his adventures, and, to exhibit his wonderful feats, began, in an erect position, to dance the Polonaise. His brothers, who were watching the performance, were astonished at his grace, and tried to imitate his ballet steps. It was in vain, hardly were they raised on two legs when they fell again upon all fours. Seeing their awkwardness, the bear went on exhibiting some higher displays of his art, which, at length, aroused the envy of the others, and so they drove him from their society.
他的同胞兄弟們發出親暱的嚎叫，歡迎他落難歸來。這隻走南闖北的熊向兄弟們講述了在國外的所見所聞，講述了自己的漂流歷險記，接着又展示了他那令人眼花繚亂的技藝—直立起來跳波蘭舞。觀看錶演的大熊小熊們看着他那優美的舞姿，竟驚詫得目瞪口呆。又都想模仿他的波蘭舞步，可一個個都心有餘而力不足。他們兩腿一直立就摔個嘴啃泥。看見他們剛剛面露尷尬之色，熊先生繼續表演更高難的動作，這一下可撩發了同伴們的一腔妒火，嫉妒他非凡的技藝，於是就將他趕出了熊羣。
英語短文故事:The lark burying its mothe百靈鳥葬母
Youth’s first duty is to show their respect to parents.
青年人的第一責任，就是孝敬父母。
The lark, according to an ancient legend, was created before the earth, she could find for her no place of burial. She left her mother lying for five days.
據古代傳說，百靈鳥誕生於地球未成形以前;母親死於一場重病，那時因爲沒有泥土，她找不到地方葬母。
On the sixth day, she had no way out and bury her mother in her own head. So she got her crest, which is popularly said to be her mother’s grave-hillock.
就停喪五天，到了第六天，她仍一籌莫展，就將母親葬在自己的頭上，因此，她就得到了冠軍，大家都說這是她母親的墳山。
英語短文故事：掩耳盜鈴Covering one’s ears to steal a bell
Once upon a time, a man saw a doorbell hanging from someone’s door and wanted to steal it.
從前，有個人看見人家大門上掛着一隻鈴鐺，就想把它偷來。
But he knew if he were to steal, it would start ringing the moment his hand touched it, if he were discovered, not only he couldn’t get the bell, but he himself might also be caught.
但是，他知道，如果去偷這隻門鈴，只要手一碰到，就會發出“鈴鈴鈴”地聲響。如被人發現，不但偷不到這隻門鈴，而且還會被捉住。
He thought this over and said to himself:
“Why will there be trouble when a bell rings? This is because our ears can hear it. If I cover my ears, I won’t be able to hear it. This way I won’t be caught.”
他想了想，自言自語地說：“爲什麼鈴響了，就會闖出禍來呢?這是因爲耳朵能聽見。假如把耳朵捂住，不是聽不見鈴聲了麼?這樣，就不會被人家捉住了。”
Later, he eventually got an idea. He first covered his own ears, then went on to steal the bell, However, in the end he was still discovered and caught red-handed.
後來，他終於想出了一個辦法：先把耳朵捂住，再去偷那隻門鈴。結果，他還是被人當場發現捉住了。
英語短文故事：脣亡齒寒If the Lips Are Gone, the Teeth Will Be Cold
Between the States of Jin and Guo was the State of Yu.
晉國和虢國的中間，隔着一個虞國。
Once, the State of Jin intended to invade the state of Guo and had to seek for permission to go by way of the State of Yu. The King of Jin was worried that the State of Yu would refuse to consent.
有一次，晉國要去進攻虢國，得向虞國借路，國王擔心虞國不答應。
Xun Xi, a high official of the State of Jin, offered his scheme to the King. He said: “If you offer that piece of round jade and that fine steed as gifts to the King of Yu to ask his permission, he is sure to give his consent.”
晉國的大臣荀息向國王獻計，說：如果您把那塊壁玉和那匹馬送給虞王，向他借路，那麼他一定會答應的。”
The King of Jin said:
晉王說：“垂棘的壁玉是我祖先的傳家寶;屈地的良馬是我最喜歡的駿馬，如果虞王接受了我們的禮物，卻又不肯借路，那怎麼辦呢?”
“The round jade from Chuji is an heirloom from my ancestors. The fine steed from Qudi is a gret favorite of mine. If the King of Yu accepted our gifts, yet would not give us permission, what shall we do then?”:
荀息回答說：
“不會。如果虞王不答應借路，必然不敢接受我們的禮物，如果他接受了禮物，把路借給我們，就好像將壁玉從裏邊的倉庫放到外邊的倉庫，把良馬從裏邊的馬廄栓到外邊的馬廄裏一樣，您何必擔心呢!”
虞王果然貪圖壁玉良馬，想答應借路。
這時候，他的大臣宮子急忙上前勸阻，說：
“不能答應，虢國是我們的鄰邦，跟我們的關係，就像嘴脣和牙齒一樣。脣亡齒寒，如果借路給晉國去進攻虢國，虢國被“滅亡了，我們虞國還會安全嗎?萬萬不能答應”
虞王沒有聽宮子奇的話，還是答應了晉國的要求。
不久，荀息帶領兵馬，滅了虢國。三年後，晉國又滅了虞國。荀息捧着壁玉，牽着駿馬，凱旋而歸，把這兩件國寶奉還了晉王。
晉王得意地笑着說：“壁玉依舊，只是駿馬老了點兒!”
