A US fighter jet shot down a Syrian warplane over the jihadi-held province of Raqqa on Sunday, thought to be the first time the US-led alliance has downed an Assad regime aircraft during the war against Isis.

Also on Sunday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards launched surface-to-surface missiles against Isis in eastern Syria in retaliation for the recent attacks by the jihadi group on the country’s parliament and a shrine.

The US military said one of its jets shot down a Syrian plane that was dropping bombs near fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces, the US-backed ground forces fighting Isis in Raqqa. Syria’s government condemned the US for the attack.

Hours after the strike, clashes erupted between pro-Assad troops and the Syrian Democratic Forces. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group with activists across Syria, said fighting had flared up around the village of Rasafa in Raqqa province, near the area where the Syrian fighter jet was downed.

In a statement from US Central Command, the US military said a Syrian regime Su-22 plane was downed by a US F/A-18E Super Hornet “in collective self-defense of coalition partnered forces”.

The US military continued: “The coalition’s mission is to defeat Isis in Iraq and Syria. The coalition does not seek to fight Syrian regime, Russian, or pro-regime forces partnered with them, but will not hesitate to defend coalition or partner forces from any threat.”

The fate of the pilot is unknown, according to a statement by Syrian army leadership, quoted on Syrian state news agency Sana.

“This flagrant violation shows there is no doubt of the fact that the American stance supports terrorism,” said the statement. “It exposes the devious intentions of America in running terrorism and investing in it in order to pursue its Zionist-American project in the region.”
