英語拼寫很多情況下與讀音不相吻合——多個字母或字母組合發同一個音，同一個字母組合可以發多個音。如字母A可以發多達八個音;TH組合發三個音如其中Thailand、Thyme、Thames等單詞發不規則的/t/音;ough字母組合共有九種發音方式，這九種發音的代表單詞是：[①though(雖然)②thought(思維、想法、思想、思潮)③enough,rough(足夠，粗糙的;使不平)④thorough(徹底的，完全的，十足的)⑤cough(咳嗽)⑥through(穿過，通過，從 …開始至終)⑦ hiccough(打嗝)⑧plough(耕作，皺眉)⑨lough(湖)]如有一個句子：Though the rough cough and hiccough plough me through,I ought to cross the lough.在這個句子中同一個字母組合ough，有八種不同的發音。這八個音分別是分別是：①[o ]②[Λf]③[f]④[甂崀⑤[)]⑥[u:]⑦[Λp]⑧)[au](9)[k]
不發音的字母特別多，如debt、ptarmigan、viscount、island、hour、indict等單詞都有不發音的字母。
拼寫完全混亂無規可循的單詞也很多Czech、Cello、Cafe、One、mnemonic、maugham、Vaughan、chalet、debut等。
英語的重音規則複雜，非重讀音節中的元音經常弱化變音。重音位置的變化有時會導致詞性、詞義的改變，比如名詞 record (重音在第一個音節)和動詞record(重音在第二個音節)。
